Staying safe during the holidays

The holidays are a time for increased gatherings, activities and fun. Statistically, they are also a time for increased accidents.

If you are not careful, you may experience serious injury. To help avoid this, there are a few common hazards to keep in mind, as well as proactive ways to avoid possible injury.

Bad weather

Bad weather tends to be the cause of increased accidents across the country. Though some people may be used to inclement weather as New Yorkers, that fact in itself may increase risk. Some parties may feel so comfortable navigating through the weather that they do not exercise proper precautions. That can increase slips and falls. On a greater scale, it can even increase vehicular accidents. Be sure to stay vigilant while traveling in bad weather, whether on foot or in a vehicle. Utilize any special clothing or tools available to you to aid you in safe transport.

Crowds

The heightened excitement of the season cannot only bring out the best in people, but also the worst. Over the years, there have been several injuries, and even fatal accidents, due to the added factors of crowds indulging in holiday shopping. Though there is not much you can do about the temperament of others, you can make sure to manage your own emotions, and if you find yourself getting worked up easily, it may be a good idea to avoid large crowds when possible.

Climbing

Hanging lights and various decorations may be part of holiday tradition, but it is also one of the main reasons for falling injuries during this time of year. Always utilize safety measures when climbing, and try to work in pairs.

These are a few of the most common hazards for injury during the holidays; however, there are other ways you may hurt yourself as well. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings and practice good safety habits to better reduce your risk of injury.
