6 common causes of car accidents

Car accidents are disturbingly common. In fact, approximately six million car crashes occur every year in the United States. Most motor vehicle collisions are a result of human error.

Even if you are a careful driver, you cannot be sure other motorists are responsible. Here are some of the most common negligent actions that cause auto collisions:

1. Reckless driving

There are many actions that may constitute careless driving, such as:

  • Excessive speeding
  • Acting aggressively
  • Changing lanes rapidly

Recklessness can result in horrific accidents and injuries.

2. Driving while impaired

Alcohol and drugs cause significant impairment in motorists. When other people drive under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol, they put your life at risk. Intoxicated driving commonly causes fatal crashes.

3. Distracted driving

Distractions are dangerous. A lot of people are on the road every day and are not paying attention to their surroundings. Drivers who take calls, text, eat or groom while behind the wheel may cause you serious injuries.

4. Speeding

Unfortunately, a lot of motorists think of speeding as no big deal. Drivers who do not stay within the speed limit put your life at risk and should be held legally accountable.

5. Running red lights

Of course, drivers who do not obey traffic lights may cause harm to responsible drivers like you. Motorists may run red lights because they are in a hurry for work or they do not think other vehicles are going through the intersection. Red always means stop.

6. Wrong-way driving

Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, but serious errors while driving can be deadly. Drivers who do not pay attention to street signs may end up making improper turns or even driving the wrong way on roads.

A car accident can cause you pain and monetary struggles. If the ignorance of another driver causes an accident, make sure you take legal action to protect yourself and recover from your injuries and any resulting financial fallout.
