New York stats for worker injuries show small decrease

People in New York may have seen that the U.S. Department of Labor recently announced the most current figures for workers injured on the job. New York's numbers showed that fewer workers in the private sector were injured on the job in 2012 than in the previous year, but the numbers still leave plenty of room for improvement. In 2012, there were 146,000 reported private industry on-the-job injuries or illnesses, or roughly 2.5 incidents for every 100 workers in the state. But the numbers for New York state and municipal workers was far more concerning. In total there were nearly 70,000 reports of public worker injuries and illnesses, or roughly 7 incidents for every 100 workers. This far exceeded the national average, raising concerns as to whether New York municipalities and state agencies can do a better job of protecting its dedicated work force. Public employees in New York do some of the most important, difficult, and unfortunately, thankless jobs of anyone in the state. These essential public employees are often asked to work under hazardous conditions and routinely have to brave bad weather, dangerous jobsites and other threats that many private employees take for granted. As these figures show, public employees are often at a significant risk of being injured on the job. State and city governments should do everything within their power to ensure the safety of workers. But sometimes, they simply do not do enough, and workers wind up paying the price. Workers who are injured may have the ability to bring a premises liability lawsuit when they are injured in an accident caused by unsafe working conditions in addition to any claims for workers' compensation that may be available. In particular, when negligence plays a role in causing an injury - for example, when a stairwell is not maintained properly, causing a fall - a personal injury lawsuit may help obtain compensation for the results of the injuries, helping victims focus on physical and emotional recovery.
